Ariane 5 to launch HYLAS 1
The fifth Ariane 5 mission of 2010, due for lift-off on 26 November from the European Spaceport at Kourou, French Guiana, will orbit HYLAS 1 (Highly Adaptable Satellite), designed and built by Airbus Defence and Space in partnership with the Indian Space Research Organisation for the satellite broadband operator Avanti Communications. HYLAS 1 will bring high-speed broadband services to remote rural areas across Europe.
Airbus Defence and Space is also responsible for Ariane 5’s development and delivery. Sole prime contractor for Ariane 5, Airbus Defence and Space delivers the fully assembled and tested launch vehicle to Arianespace, the commercial launch service provider. The company also supplies all the Ariane 5 stages, equipment bays, flight software and numerous sub-assemblies.
The Airbus Defence and Space teams on site at the Guiana Space Centre are now busy with final preparations for what will be the 54th Ariane 5 launch.
This flight is a double launch, and will also carry the communications satellite Intelsat 17.
