HYLAS 1 launched from Kourou in French Guiana
The fifth Ariane 5 mission of 2010 has successfully launched the telecommunications satellite HYLAS 1 (Highly Adaptable Satellite), designed and built by Airbus Defence and Space in partnership with the Indian Space Research Organisation for the satellite broadband operator Avanti Communications. HYLAS 1 will bring high-speed broadband services to remote rural areas across Europe.
Airbus Defence and Space is responsible for Ariane 5’s development and delivery. Sole prime contractor for Ariane 5, Airbus Defence and Space delivers the fully assembled and tested launch vehicle to Arianespace, the commercial launch service provider. The company also supplies all the Ariane 5 stages, equipment bays, flight software and numerous sub-assemblies.
Flight 198 was a double launch, and also placed the communications satellite Intelsat 17 in orbit.
