Ariane 5 in Berlin

12 m mock-up of Ariane 5 on the city’s Potsdamer Platz

Germany’s capital Berlin has recently acquired a new landmark: on Saturday 29 May 2010 Airbus Defence and Space unveiled a 12 m mock-up of an Ariane 5 on the city’s centrally-located Potsdamer Platz.

For two weeks the launcher will serve as an ambassador for the ILA international air show which is taking place in Berlin from 8-13 June 2010.Ariane can be seen as symbolic of both European unity and of its independent access to space. President of the Bremen Senat Jens Böhrnsen, Berlin’s Finance Secretary Almuth Nehring-Venus and Evert Dudok, Managing Director of Airbus Defence and Space Germany, attended the unveiling ceremony.

For Airbus Defence and Space, the launch of the 50th Ariane 5 on 22 May – the 36th successful launch in a row – coincided perfectly with exhibiting this impressive mock-up for the first time in Germany – and at such a prominent location. A true flagship for space activities, Ariane is a unique European success story. As prime contractor Airbus Defence and Space plays an essential role in the programme, securing thousands of jobs throughout Europe. Through the mock-up, Airbus Defence and Space intends to raise public awareness of the technical prowess and great success of the European space industry.
