Baikonur Sights & Experiences

The CryoSat-2 blog is run by two members of Airbus Defence and Space’s CryoSat-2 in-situ launch campaign team bringing you blow-by-blow information on activities as they happen, right up to the launch and beyond. Cryosat-2 is at the Baikonur cosmodrome undergoing preparations running up to its scheduled launch.

In the night of the 18th to the 19th of January the in Russia the baptism of Christ is celebrated. One of the team took the chance to participate. The ceremony started with a service in the nice orthodox church of Baikonur at 10 pm on the 18th. As the church was such crowded there was no chance to escape before the end at 2 am on the 19th. But it paid off to wait such long. After the service the people gathered in front of the church and processed towards the Syrdarja River led by the Pope. Following the Russian tradition some fearless undressed and jumped in the partial ice covered river as shown on the picture. The temperature outside was minus 15°C!
