Airbus Defence and Space

Farnborough International Airshow

Airbus Defence and Space is at the biennial Farnborough Airshow, which opened today, one of the world’s most iconic global aerospace events

The 1,000m² AIRBUS Group stand, located in Hall 4 G12, is showcasing products from all four AIRBUS Group Divisions – Airbus/Airbus Military, Airbus Defence and Space, Defence & Security and Eurocopter. The Airbus Defence and Space display includes models of Paradigm’s Skynet 5 military communications satellite, Infoterra’s TerraSAR-X radar imaging satellite, Secure Satcom System’s Air Patrol terminal, Galileo, and the crowd-pulling Mars rover Bruno.

In the Space Zone (Hall 3), kitted out with a large touch screen showing the Airbus Defence and Space ‘All the space you need’ corporate video, visitors need to pass the company’s stand to get to the arena at the back where speeches are being given – ESA took centre stage today to talk about its technology transfer programme.

In this area Airbus Defence and Space is exhibiting the Alphasat I-XL GEO communications satellite, the SWARM atmospheric research satellite, the Mobile Patrol satcom terminal and presentations from Infoterra on geo-information services to help combat climate change.

One of the highlights on the Airbus Defence and Space Zone stand is Avanti’s live demonstrations of how its ‘Web from Space’ initiative works. The initiative is being launched to demonstrate how satellites are the best option for people in rural areas who currently cannot get broadband access via cable networks. The live demo has already been presented to interested and influential showgoers such as John Higgins CBE, Chair of Intellect, the UK’s technology trade association. Mr Higgins was accompanied by UKspace Chair Richard Peckham who is also Airbus Defence and Space’s UK Strategy and Business Development Director.

Hot on the heels of Airbus Defence and Space’ agreement to develop space-based router technology with CISCO last week, one of Airbus Defence and Space’s key messages this week is the ease and cost-effectiveness of gaining broadband connectivity via satellite. It is already being utilised by more than 2,500 customers in Scotland and over 500 in Northern Ireland. Not only that, the infrastructure is available throughout Europe – stretching as far as Albania. And anyone surfing the web from space at Farnborough today got their own red sticker to prove it!
