An unprecedented space adventure

Six volunteers were selected from among 5,680 candidates for a mission to go where no man has gone before… Three Russians, one Frenchman, a Chinese man and a Columbian-Italian were shut away on 3 June in a replica of a space capsule which will be their home for 520 days:  the time required for a round trip to Mars. The schedule:  250 days on the way out to Mars, 30 days on the red planet, and 240 to return to Earth. But let’s keep our feet firmly planted on the ground! Our astronauts will never actually leave Moscow, where the experiment is being conducted as part of a cooperative programme between the European Space Agency (ESA), the Russian Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos) and the Russian Institute for Biomedical Problems (IBMP).

Despite not moving an inch, this will still be an extraordinary adventure! The crew members will have no windows, no fresh air and only limited contact with the outside world. On the other hand, they are guaranteed a successful “landing”. Throughout this space adventure, scientists will be observing the physical and psychological effects of prolonged isolation on the crew members.
