Mars’ moon Phobos

During the last of a series of eight encounters with the martian moon Phobos, the Airbus Defence and Space-built High-Resolution Stereo Camera on ESA’s Mars Express spacecraft acquired a detailed view of the martian satellite. The orbiter, primed by Airbus Defence and Space, flew past Phobos at a distance of only 100 kilometres in January 2011 and imaged the southern hemisphere of the irregularly-shaped moon.

Mars Express reached Mars in December 2003 and has been so successful that its current mission extension means it will operate until at least the end of 2012.
