The most complete observations of our planet
Exactly 10 years ago today, Europe’s largest and most complex Earth observation satellite, Envisat, was launched.
The successful operation of the Envisat satellite over the last decade has played a decisive role in improving our understanding of climate change, monitoring global and regional changes in our planet and its resources, and fostering new and improved practical applications. Envisat has taken satellite-based Earth observation to a whole new level of operational capability and efficiency.
As prime contractor for the European Space Agency (ESA), Airbus Defence and Space took on overall responsibility for the development of the mission and of the complete system. Airbus Defence and Space also managed the development and manufacture of the satellite and five of its 10 instruments.
Envisat has exceeded all expectations, delivering observations of an even higher quality than was originally specified.
Originally scheduled to last five years, the mission has already been extended twice and is now set to continue until at least 2013.
