XMM-Newton, 10 years in space

XMM-Newton super-telescope celebrates 10 years in space

On 10 December 1999, the XMM-Newton space telescope, designed and built by Airbus Defence and Space for the European Space Agency, was launched by an Ariane 5 rocket. It now ranks among the most successful space observatories ever and is one of Airbus Defence and Space’s masterpieces in scientific missions.

XMM-Newton – named in honour of British astronomer and scientist Sir Isaac Newton – has detected more X-ray sources than any previous satellite and is helping to solve many cosmic mysteries of the violent universe, from what happens in and around black holes to the formation of galaxies in the early universe.
