Flight 181: Ariane 5 ES/ATV – payload: ATV (Automated Transfer Vehicle)

Flight 181 is the 37th Ariane 5 launch and the first in 2008. An A5 ES will be used for this flight, intermediary in the Ariane 5 range.

This will be the 33rd commercial mission for Ariane 5. Launcher 528 used for this mission is the 33rd production launcher, the first in the A5/ES series: it has a “P2” lower composite identical to that used for the A5/ECA version (EAP with overloaded S1 segment and P2 type EPC with Vulcain 2 engine), and an upper composite comprising a P2000 EPS and composite structure VEB. This launcher is the twelfth complete vehicle delivered to Arianespace, integrated and inspected under AIRBUS DEFENCE AND SPACE responsibility in the Launcher Integration Building (BIL).

In a single-payload configuration using a long pattern fairing, it will carry the first ATV (Automated Transfer Vehicle) cargo carrier for the European Space Agency (ESA). The ATV will deliver supplies to the International Space Station (ISS).
