• Communications satellite shipped from Airbus Defence and Space facilities in Toulouse, ready to be launched by Proton in April 2012
• Airbus Defence and Space is co-prime contractor for Y1B, the second satellite for Al Yah Satellite Communications Company
• Y1B will provide both commercial and governmental communications services
21 March 2012 – Al Yah Satellite Communications Company (Yahsat) satellite Y1B has left the Airbus Defence and Space facilities in Toulouse, France, and was transported by air to Baikonur, Kazakhstan, in preparation for its launch by an ILS Proton Breeze M vehicle in April 2012.
Y1B is the second satellite built for Yahsat by an industrial team of Airbus Defence and Space and Thales Alenia Space (TAS) acting as co-prime contractors as part of a turnkey system contract that includes two satellites and associated ground segments.
The first satellite Y1A was successfully launched in April 2011 on an Ariane 5 and is flawlessly operating in orbit to the full satisfaction of the customer. For Y1A and Y1B, Airbus Defence and Space supplied the Eurostar E3000 platform and assembled and tested the spacecraft. TAS supplied the communications payload and is also in charge of the launcher procurement.
Y1B weighs more than 6,000 kg at launch and will have a spacecraft power of 14kW at the end of its 15-years design lifetime. Y1B is equipped with a commercial multi-beam payload in Ka-band to provide broadband services to Middle-East and African countries and a Ka-band governmental payload.
