Galileo is the European satellite navigation system comprising a global satellite-based network for precise positioning and timing information.

Airbus Defence and Space is a global space industry leader in all sectors of the space business. The company is a world leader in satellite navigation systems and has extensive experience in the design, development and manufacture of state-of-the-art systems and equipment.

Airbus Defence and Space is a major partner of the European Commission and the European Space Agency for the Galileo project. Airbus Defence and Space was the industrial prime contractor for the GIOVE demonstrator satellites which secured the Galileo frequency filings and proved in orbit, the major critical technologies for the final satellites (GIOVE-A by SSTL).

For the In-Orbit-Validation (IOV) phase, Airbus Defence and Space was the industry prime, leading the design, development and manufacture of the first four complete Galileo satellites, including the highly complex payload. Airbus Defence and Space was also the prime of the Galileo Ground Control Segment and was responsible for the system design, procurement and verification of this segment.

For the Full Operational Capability (FOC) phase, Airbus Defence and Space provides its leading expertise in navigation system engineering as a major contributor to the System Support Segment. For the completion of the system’s infrastructure, the company continues its lead role in the Galileo Ground Control Segment and in navigation payload for all FOC spacecraft (by SSTL). Airbus

Defence and Space is the industrial prime for Ariane 5, adapted to launch four Galileo satellites simultaneously, and is a partner in the European SpaceOpal consortium for the Galileo FOC Operations Contract.

Airbus Defence and Space group is a reliable supplier of state-of-the-art equipment for the Galileo satellites, as for example the solar arrays, clock electronics, amplifiers and transponders.

Reflecting its high commitment for the next generation of Galileo, Airbus Defence and Space is under contract for the definition of the 2nd generation of Galileo satellites and for the pre-development of the Inter-Satellite-Link subsystem, considered one of the key technologies for the 2nd generation.

For the European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service EGNOS, Airbus Defence and Space is leading a definition phase study for ESA on the next generation of the EGNOS system. For future procurements of the new EGNOS system, Airbus Defence and Space fully supports the European Commission to establish a competitive playing field.

In addition, Airbus Defence and Space is the leading supplier of navigation payloads supporting the Space Based Augmentation Systems EGNOS and Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS).

Complementing its expertise from Galileo and EGNOS, Airbus Defence and Space plays a leading role in the development of cost-effective solutions for advanced positioning and navigation applications:

  • Indoor Navigation

  • Local Augmentation Systems

  • High-precision Local Positioning System

With its significant heritage in navigation, Airbus Defence and Space stays fully committed to the success of Galileo and EGNOS and continues to develop state-of-the-art navigation expertise, technologies and solutions. Using the full range of its industrial capabilities, Airbus Defence and Space offers end-to-end solutions, comprising space, ground and user segment, operations as well as large scale service provision.
